Cranes Lift Massive LNG Tank in One Load |
  |
July 2003 saw new Goliath cranes lift
and install an entire spherical tank into
the cargo hold of an LNG carrier under construction
at Sakaide Shipyard, Kawasaki Shipbuilding
Corporation. The aluminum alloy tank was
mammoth in size measuring 41 meters in diameter
and weighing in at over 1,000 tonnes. Kawasaki
Shipbuilding introduced the two new Goliath
cranes this spring. The cranes are some
of the largest in Japan with a carrying
capacity of 800 tonnes each. Previously,
tanks had been built on LNG carriers by
loading three parts separately, however
these new cranes have enabled Kawasaki Shipbuilding
to install a complete tank in one load.
The installation of a spherical tank of this
magnitude on an LNG carrier under construction
in one stage is a world first. By completing
spherical tanks off the ship, the onboard
work is greatly simplified allowing for improved
efficiency, safety and construction quality.
Kawasaki Shipbuilding is continuously striving
to improve production technology and quality
in their specialty field of LNG carriers. |
